5 Compelling Reasons to Invest in an eBike in Singapore

Updated: Mar 13

Still undecided about getting an eBike? Here are some of the reasons our customers have made the switch. If these resonate with you, an eBike might be the perfect choice!

The high upfront cost of an eBike can be a deterrent for some, especially with the recent rise in electricity prices. Additionally, Singapore’s ever-expanding bus and train network has made public transport a convenient option for many. The 2018 ban on Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) has also left a lasting impression, leading to the widespread misconception that eBikes are not allowed in Singapore.

So, why should you consider investing in an eBike? Depending on your needs and priorities, an eBike can be an excellent mode of transportation, as evidenced by the growing number of eBike users in Singapore. Keep reading to discover why many others have made the switch!

1. It's more affordable than you might expect

With various installment plans now available, you can own a brand-new 48V Eco Drive 2.0 eBike for just $297.50 per month over 4 months through Grab PayLater.

Apart from the initial cost of purchasing an eBike, many people are also worried about the amount of electricity the eBike would use. For instance, the Eco Drive 2.0 model operates on a 48V 10.5Ah battery, which translates to 0.504kWh. Based on the current regulated tariff (as of 6 September 2022) of 32 cents per kWh, charging the battery daily for 6 hours (a full charge) throughout a month will result in an electricity bill increase of less than $30 (90 kWh per month). This calculation is specifically for frequent eBike users who completely drain the battery each day. Opting to charge the eBike less frequently, say once every 2 or 3 days with less than a full charge, would significantly reduce the electricity cost.

2. Cost of maintenance is low

Unlike cars and motorcycles, eBikes have low maintenance costs and replacement parts are readily available, making them a cost-effective option for food delivery riders seeking to cut down on expenses.

Thanks to its global popularity, there are numerous resources available for maintaining an eBike to ensure its durability. The maintenance of an eBike is akin to that of a regular bicycle and is beginner-friendly.

3. No need to exert yourself

While a regular bicycle with a similar wheel diameter may be much cheaper than an eBike, riding an eBike requires significantly less effort. The electric motor's pedal assist guarantees a smooth ride, even uphill. You won't need to worry about adjusting gears - you'll simply switch between different modes on an eBike. Whether it's for work or leisure, traveling long distances won't feel like a burden on an eBike.

4. Keep carbon footprint low

As part of the ongoing initiatives to address climate change, opting for an eBike over a motorcycle or car will result in lower carbon emissions, as evidenced by the recent analysis of electricity usage. Despite the fact that our power stations continue to rely on fossil fuels, it is worth noting that natural gas is a cleaner alternative to petroleum. The infographic below illustrates the variance in greenhouse gas emissions per individual, factoring in the energy requirements for traveling the same distance, including e-biking, cycling, and walking.

5. Enjoy riding on roads and Park Connector Network (PCN)

Despite common misunderstandings, eBikes are permitted not just on roads but also on the extensive Park Connector Networks (PCN). Unlike other vehicles and PMDs restricted to one of these networks, eBikes enjoy the advantages of both. As the island's PCN network continues to expand, eBikes will become an ideal choice for commuting or recreational purposes.

We trust that our blog has resolved your queries and that you will also consider transitioning to an eBike, like numerous others have done.
